THINK
BIKE
THINKBIKE is a non-profit
organisation founded and headed by Brian Canhoo (better known as "Buccaneer")
to drive a bike/biker safety campaign for South Africa. Although strongest in Guateng (but
represented nationally), THINKBIKE
is affiliated with the likes of DRIVE ALIVE and seeks to grow itself into a
position of strength to lobby government on matters of bike/biker safety. It's a
great place to educate yourself on safety issues and to keep abreast of
initiatives to this end. The site hosts what is
arguably the most popular bike/biker chat room forum. If you're a biker, you
need to join -and pay the affordable membership fee. Email Brian at brian@buccaneer.za.ne

BIKE
SA MAGAZINE
BikeSA is South Africa's
largest circulation hardcopy publication bike/biker magazine. Founded and run by
Simon Fourie, it deserves all credit for what it has done for biking in South
Africa. The website also hosts a chat room forum that is right up there with
that of THINKBIKE. BikeSA has the respect of The Rag and we would be doing
bikers an injustice if we excluded this link from our website. Loone wonders
whether they will ever return the compliment, however.... Pity the publication
is more like an advertising catalogue than an entertaining read, but that's were
the money is, right?

TOP
BIKE MAGAZINE
Sorry Mr Fourie and other BikeSA
fans, but The Rag reckons Top Bike is currently the best hardcopy
bike/biking magazine in South Africa. Great bike reviews, some top drawer
local and international bike journalism, useful technical and safety stuff
and an up-to-date index of all bike products and prices. Their website is
crap though. No content and last updated n November 2006. You are going to
have to go out and buy the thing, but its worth it. |

iMOTO ON-LINE BIKE STORE
We've stated that many of these
Useful Links are included for subjective reasons. We introduce to you HUGH BRITZ
, the owner of iMoto, a first-class online bike and bike spares/ accessories
dealership. Hugh also owns MIDVAAL MOTORCYCLE CENTRE, 33 Meyer Street, Mayerton,
tel. 016-3624914. Hugh has an entertaining newsletter on his website - www.imoto.co.za.
When we put out the earliest versions of The Rag in the form of emails and
attachments to emails, Hugh went and published them on his website.
No-body asked him. He saw something, liked it, and gave it his support. Ever
since, he has maintained a link to The Rag on www.imoto.co.za,
again without being asked. Hugh, we suspect, is that rare class of businessman
who believes there is a place for everyone - and is willing to give the new guys
a little boost. He also strikes as as astute - and adequately savvy to withdraw
that support. f the cause demonstrates to be rubbish. This is our small way of
saying "thank you, Mr Britz". We encourage you to take your bike,
biking, biking accessory and bike spares requirements to him. He is "good
people to do business with". Email

to the bike club scene in greater Durban area. Name a bike/biker related event

HIGHWAY RIDERS MC
Founded
by DAVE STRAUSS and a large number of disgruntled former JAB MC riders, Highway
Riders MC is the new club on the block, but boasts a membership of bikers who've
been around a long time. Durban based, the club intends to establish chapters
nationally. It's ethos differs from traditional bike clubs in that there are no
membership fees or leadership structure, thus avoiding. Each chapter is hosted
by a "coordinator". Loone is honoured to have been awarded colours
and "founder member" status. The club is very much family orientated
and plans a membership category for the children of members. Highway Riders MC
supports THINK BIKE big time! Email Dave Strauss at dave@highwayriders.org.

BARBARIAN V8
MOTORCYCLES
Introducing
WARREN KATZ, the designer, manufacturer and international distributor of the 3.7
liter, V8 Barbarian fat-arsed bike that makes Harleys look like a toy. The bike
shown here is one of his latest creations. Built in Australia, where the bike is
selling well, it is starting to find a market in the USA and Europe. Sadly,
there are none in South Africa as yet, but we guess it won't be too long before
some brave nutter parts with about R 400K to land one. Loone reckons it will be
a damned fine distance tourer and would love to ride one from Durban to Cape
Town. Check out the website for some nice pictures of Warren's wife modeling the
bike....

OFF-ROAD
ADVENTURES QUAD SAFARIS
When
Loone dished up the First Interim Edition of The Rag, he got a couple of cheeky
emails from a certain CHRIS CORBETT (an Afrikaans boer Frenchman, he calls
himself), who got bit right back. Turns out Chris owns this quadbike adventure
farm in the Drakensberg, so Loone told him if the place is so damned smart why
doesn't he invite Loone around to come play so The Rag can write up the
experience. Chris embarrassed Loone by inviting Loone for a
freebie weekend and quadbike ride. Loone has not been yet, but it's high up on
the priority list. Have a look at his website. It looks like a ton of fun - and
look out for the article after Loone has trashed his quadbike
fleet! Email Chris at ccorbett@eci.co.za

BIKERS.CO.ZA
WEBSITE
Only about a month old
this website already demonstrating itself to be a popular resource about
bikers and biking in the Western Cape. The organised biking community in
this part of South Africa really has its act together; not terribly
surprising as some of the best rides in the word are to be found in this
area. The site includes a very detailed email contact database for bike
clubs and organisations all over South Africa. A well designed, easy to
navigate, useful website. Some aspects are still under construction, but
if you ride in this area - or are planning a ride through the area - you
are advised to consult this entertaining resource. |

INDEPENDENT
RIDERS
Their blurb says, "Ever
considered riding for a club, but didn't feel like the structure that
normally goes with that route? Independent Riders provides an alternative
means of wearing a patch that does not entail rigid, constitutionalised
rules...The name says it all. A group of friends riding under one patch
yet you retain your individuality. We are a club without a constitution.
You are not bound or obligated in any way or to anybody but yourself. It's
the way of the Old School....You must be an active member in the
motorcycle fraternity. You must own a motorcycle of 400 c.c. or above.
After hanging out for a while, and you decide to join, you can then inform
the guy who introduced you. He will then in turn notify the other members
and call for a vote, only riding members have voting rights and not
pillions. All voting will be done by ballot. You will only receive your
colours should you have a 100% acceptance vote. Here we follow Old School
Rules, you will be notified by one of the members." A bit
like Highway Riders, actually. |
